10 Anthony Bourdain Quotes That Will Inspire You to be You

Some people surprise you. Even if you believed they live a life rich with experience, you come to see their true struggle when they take their own life. Facing this reality snaps you out of your comfortable world view, takes your assumptions and your prejudices, and turn them upside down. That person that traveled the world, was a successful storyteller and an unforgettable chef, lead you to believe that maybe there is hope in the world. Anthony Bourdain was one of those people.

Bourdain travel quotesHe provided a realistic perspective into cultures, food and people around the world. He was unapologetic and he was the first to admit that he has hurt and disappointed a lot of people in his life, but what he also did was bring the world into our homes. He brought cultures together through food and made the world feel relatable. He was able to connect with the most diverse populations and expose the beauty that lays within humanity—our connection through food and how it brings people together.

He was a man that thrived in uncertainty. He was all about questioning the nature of reality, and what that did is open up the world to all possibilities.

His philosophy around food aligns beautifully with my belief in Gursha. It’s an image he and I share of the world coming together through food. Although I educate about nutrition and its importance, I also encourage to bring everyone to the table and grind through our differences to enjoy one thing so beautiful…food, and how it brings us together. I am going to leave you with these words from Bourdain:

“One can be forgiven for thinking, when you see how similar they are, the two peoples, both of them cook with pride, eat with passion, love their kids, love the land in which they live or the land they dream of returning to, who live so close, who are locked in such an intimate, if deadly embrace, might somehow, some day, figure out how to live with each other.”

#1.“Certainty is my enemy. You know, I’m all about doubt, questioning one’s self and the nature of reality. Constantly.”

#2.“Look, man, the only thing that matters is life or death. That’s the edge. Embarrassment, shame, humiliation, I can live with those. I’m used to it. Why hang on to it, though?”

#3. “To climb a dune in the Egyptian desert and look out over the desert as the moon’s rising, surrounded by friends that I work with, a belly full of some food that no one outside that time zone ever gets to experience, that’s a ‘pinch me’ moment for sure. It’s pretty damn awesome for a guy for whom brunch shift is a pretty recent memory.”

#4. “Most of the really great meals I’ve had in my life over the last 15 years have probably had thoroughly filthy bathrooms. Let’s face it. If there’s like chickens running around the floor of the restaurant, they’re feeling pretty confident about the food.”

#5. “It’s those little human moments that are the ones that stick with you forever, the random acts of kindness.”

#6. “If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.”

#7. “It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I still have to go, the more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough; to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom…is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.

#8. “As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.”

#9. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

#10. Anthony’s career advice: “Show up on time. Do not be confined by what you think is expected or wanted by others. Don’t work with assholes.”

May those who are suffering from depression and despair, hang on a little longer and seek external support. Life sucks sometimes, you’re not alone and there are people who want to help. I’ll offer free support services and health guidance for those who want it…just ask.
